Van Baalen vann ALDE-striden

När man är i Estland så får man ändå konstatera med lite beklagan att Siim Kallas, det estniska Reformpartiets kandidat till ordförande i ALDE:s europeiska partiorganisation förlorade ordförandestriden i Budapest mot nederländernas Hans van Baalen.

Van Baalens seger kan beskrivas som förkrossande med 296 röster mot Kallas 117. Van Baalen var tidigare vice ordförande i organisationen.

Fredrick Federley som drog tillbaka sin kandidatur som ordförande till förmån för Siim Kallas lyckades bli vald som en av ALDE:s vice ordförande. Totalt har ALDE sju viceordförande och Federley lyckades vinna ta den sista platsen med god marginal

– När vi ser hur klimatförändringarna, arbetslösheten och utmaningarna med att hjälpa människor på flykt ställer allt större krav på den Europeiska politiken vill jag att de liberala partierna i Europa ska vara de som presenterar en tydlig väg framåt för framtidens Europa, säger Fredrick Federley i ett pressmeddelande.

En sak som Federley pekar ut är de krafter som hotar den liberala demokratin, som bland annat utvecklingen i Ungern.

– Vi ser ju att inte minst Ungern tummar på frågor gällande demokrati, yttrandefrihet och en fri journalistik. Där har vi ett viktigt arbete och också en stor utmaning att försöka motverka att fler länder går i den riktningen, säger Fredrick Federley i pressmeddelandet.

Posten ska inte blandas ihop med partigruppen i Europaparlamentet utan är paraplyorganisationen för alla europeiska partier.

Sverigedemokraterna är Nigel Farage lydigaste parti

Om ni tror att Sverigedemokraterna har skickat några självständiga rebeller till Europaparlamentet, eller att för den delen att partiet efterliknar sina förebilder i Dansk Folkeparti så tror ni fel. Sverigedemokraterna beter sig så svenskt som nidbilden ofta gör gällande, lojala mot partigruppens ledare Nigel Farage och ställer inte till något större väsen.

Det är en hårdkokt sammanfattning av en mycket längre och akademisk text ”A Loyal Rookie? The Sweden Democrats´ First Year in the European Parliament” av Niklas Bolin som publicerats i The Polish Quarterly of International affair. Bolin är statsvetare vid Mittuniversitet och artikeln hänvisar även till data och intervjuer från just EUbloggens genomgångar av SD:s omröstningar.

Bolins artikel belyser både hur SD hamnade i partigruppen EFDD och hur det första året varit:

The analysis shows that, while vote loyalty is generally low in the EFDD group, the SD tends to vote in a similar way as UKIP. Moreover, and surprisingly, the coherence between the SD and the DPP is very low, indicating that group membership is more important than political affinity for the SD in deciding on its voting stance in the EP.

Att vara en lojal spelare till gruppens tyngsta parti, UKIP, tycks alltså ha varit viktigare än att följa sin förebild Dansk Folkeparti. En orsak till det kan återfinnas i spelet om var SD skulle hamna. Bolin konstaterar att SD skulle kunna ha bidragit till att Le Pen fått ihop sin partigrupp snabbare (och därigenom fått det svårt för Farage att få ihop EFDD). Det hade inte varit konstigt med tanke på att Kent Ekeroth var kassör i den Le Pens EAF och att Kasselstrand samarbetade med ungdomsförbunden till Front National, FPÖ och Vlaams Belang.

Först när UKIP stod utan Sannfinländarna och Dansk Folkeparti, som gick över till ECR, som dörren för SD öppnades. Men det var inte en enkel eller oproblematisk process.

While first denying it, the two SD MEPs were forced to sign an agreement distancing themselves from the party’s past. As we shall see, this might also be a possible explanation for how the SD has acted during its first year in the EP.

Bolin visar att Sverigedemokraterna och UKIP är de partier som röstar mest lika i EFDD. Vidare visar Bolin att SD faktiskt röstar överlägset mest lika UKIP i ett större urval av partier. Även Geert Wilders VVP, som är med i Le Pens partigrupp, har en hög överensstämmelse med SD.

Däremot är andelen omröstningar där man hamnar på lika som Dansk Folkeparti överraskande få. Notera också hur lite lSD röstar lika som det andra stora partiet i EFDD, Beppe Grillos 5-stjärnerörelse.

Resultatet som Bolin får motsäger också SD:s favoritargument att man röstar som man röstar i Europaparlamentet för att man röstar emot europeisk integration.

While the overall coherence with other radical right parties is low, it is somewhat higher than with the other included parties. Interestingly, it is hard to find any evidence that the stances towards European integration are of any importance in understanding behaviour in the EP. If, for example, the SD’s level of coherence with the Sweden’s most EU-friendly party, the Liberal Party, is compared with the other hard Eurosceptic party, the Left Party, only small differences can be identified. While overall coherence is somewhat higher for the Liberal Party, the opposite holds true if only final votes are compared.

Och Bolins slutsats landar i följande:

The UKIP leadership, on the other hand, was initially sceptical about the SD. Hence, loyalty towards UKIP might be a way for the SD to increase its credibility and ensure that the extremism of the past is consigned to history. Of course, it is also possible that the reasons referred to by the SD, such as lack of resources and experience, are equally important.

Kallas & Federley kör ihop

Det blev som Federley sade i en TV-intervju: Siim Kallas och Fredrick Federley gör gemensam sak i att nå ALDE-toppen (europeiska partiorganisationen, inte partigruppen i Europaparlamentet). Efter ett möte så drar Federley tillbaka sin ordförandekandidatur och siktar istället på vice-posten. Kallas och Federley kör nu ett race där de stödjer varandra i kamp mot holländaren Hans van Baalen som är den andra ordförandekandidaten.

The only question to answer in Budapest is:

Do we want to be part of big European politics?

We must admit that during recent decades the liberal alternative in the minds of Europeans has not been as attractive as we would like it to be.

To re-enter the main stage of European politics we need clear policy lines and strong leadership. We must fight the radical left and compete with conservatives for the European votes.

We must prove that Europe can do better with more liberal policies.

Therefore, I give you the most important input that really matters:

A strong liberal vision for a better Europe that attracts attention in the European capitals and finds a way to the hearts of the citizens.

Clear, distinctive and high-profile pan-European political vision will help the liberal movements and member parties all over Europe gain more ground in their respective electorates and become truly credible and competitive parties.

The European Union must be politically strong, economically competitive and socially inclusive. True liberals cannot rest while even the four main freedoms of the European Union do not fully exist in reality!

ALDE is an alliance of small parties. Many of them have joined us because they want to maintain their independence in some policies. They do not want to surrender to overly centralized EPP and ESP. Our fragmentation is inevitable. This is our weakness but it is also a source of strength. ALDE must be a platform for different views and an alliance where everybody respects and listens to others.
With this common vision in mind I have joined forces with Mr Fredrick Federley who has decided to stand for vice-president and support me for president. Den estniske politikveteranen Siim Kallas har dykt upp i racet att bli ALDE-partiledare (för paraplyorganisationen, intepartigruppen i Europaparlamentet9, där finns sedan tidigare Fredrick Federley (C) som kandidat.

Det berättade Federley i den livesändning som DT gjorde och som även sändes av HelaHälsingland och Östersunds-Posten från centerstämman. Siim Kallas har minst sagt en omfattande karriär. Han har varit Transportkommissionär 2010-2014, kommissionär för administrativa frågor (inklusive revision och bedrägeribekämpning 2004-2009) samt haft posten som vice ordförande i kommissionen. Dessförinnan statsminister, finansminister och utrikesminister i Estland. Samt suttit i Högsta Sovjet.

I intervjun som du kan se här pratar Federley om att han kan komma att stå tillbaka till förmån för Kallas kandidatur.

Dear friends,

We’re bouncing back. Liberalism has taken a rough – and often unfair – beating across the continent during the crisis. But our perseverance, hard work and focus on real reform is starting to pay off. Now it’s time for a step-change. A new phase for the ALDE Party that calls for energy and conviction. That’s why I’m asking for your support at the ALDE Congress in Budapest to lead the party as president.

All of us enter politics because we want to change things for the better. Certainly that’s the case for us liberals. But looking around Europe today the sheer scale of that ambition is clear. Because this is a Europe that in so many ways are taking steps in the wrong direction – away from liberal values of freedom of speech, human rights and equality for everyone before the law.

Socialists and conservatives, politically bankrupt and stagnant, are drawn toward populists at the extreme ends of the political spectrum. Europe is becoming more closed up. Like an injured animal, frightened, angry and holed up in its den.

I’m proud that we European liberals stand for a different vision. Provokingly optimistic. Fiercely tolerant. Staunchly responsible.

We can provide the compass to get Europe back to saving lives rather than tearing families part. A Europe that creates new jobs rather than deficits. A Europe that preserves our environment rather than exploits it for short-term gains.  In short, we have to rejuvenate Europe and bring hope and prosperity to a continent that has a marvellous history but seems to have forgotten about the future.

Under Graham Watson’s leadership, we have seen the ALDE Party greatly consolidated, strengthened and expanded. We have the tool and the common platform.  We have the momentum. Now we need a step-change. With energy and conviction we can change Europe. And we will.

In the coming weeks I hope to meet many of you in person and I hope that you will give me your support in this new phase for the ALDE Party.

Socialdemokrat går över till Le Pens-partigrupp

I Europaparlamentet har Socialdemokraterna och Feministiskt Initiativ under onsdagen tappat en partigruppkamrat. En ledamot i S&D-gruppen lämnar och går över till Marine Le Pens högerextrema grupp ENF. Det tillkännagavs av Marine Le Pen på twitter vid lunchtid.

Partigruppen får därmed ytterligare stadga och fasthet genom en ny nationalitet. Det krävs minst sju nationaliteter för att bilda en partigrupp, ENF har nu åtta.

Rebega tillhörde det socialdemokratiska partiet i Rumänien, ett parti som brukar betraktas som S-gruppens svarta får bland annat på grund av diskrimineringen av romer i Rumänien.

Sverigedemokraterna i Expo & HelaHälsingland.se

Efter den uppmärksammade händelsen när SD stod upp tillsammans med Le Pen och försökte blocka förslag om att stoppa utländsk finansiering i Europaparlamentet så följs detta upp av Expo där partiets MEP:ar ger olika förklaringar till sitt agerande och där Beppe Grillos antisemitiska utspel i Sverigedemokraternas EFDD-grupp viftas bort, ”antingen som ”skämt” eller som missvisande mediebeskrivningar”.

På Hela Hälsingland har jag uppmärksammat att den uteslutne Gustav Kasselstrand framträdde tillsammans med Mikael Jansson, försvarspolitisk talesperson. Den artikeln samt replik från Jansson har även den EU-koppling.
